What do members of the Evangelical Covenant Church believe?
The Evangelical Covenant Church is historically part of the churches which grew out of the Protestant Reformation, but it was also influenced by other renewal movements through the years. Three primary theological streams joined together to create the river of faith in which Covenanters find the living water of Christ Jesus today.
The stream from the Protestant Reformation and the Lutheran Church from our historical roots in the State Church of Sweden affirmed for us the biblical teaching of salvation by grace through faith.
We believe salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, based on scripture alone.
Our early parents in the faith were also influenced by pastors and Christian leaders like Philip Jacob Spenser and August Hermann Francke. They belonged to a group of Christians called Pietists, and stressed the importance of a genuine faith and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit in transforming sinners into disciples.
We believe everyone must be born again to experience new life in Christ, and Christians are called to live holy lives as enabled by the Holy Spirit.
A third stream of faith which taught our spiritual fore bearers to celebrate the joy of life in Christ flowed from Christian Pietists in Germany. These Christians, called Moravians, were led by reformers like Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf and also had a profound impact on Charles and John Wesley, founders of the Methodist church.
We believe those whom Jesus sets free are free indeed, and Christ gives us life with purpose and worth celebrating! It's great to be a part of the living family of God!
