Our faith can be summed up in five basic affirmations ...
The Evangelical Covenant Church seeks to form and nurture communities that are deeply committed to Jesus Christ and passionately engaged in Christ’s mission in the world. The purpose of Covenant Affirmations is to make clear the values and principles that have guided the Evangelical Covenant Church since its founding in 1885.
We believe in the authority of the Bible.
It is the Word of God, and the only perfect rule for faith (what we believe), doctrine (how we talk about and teach what we believe), and conduct (how we live out what we believe.
We believe everyone must be born again.
The Bible makes it clear we are all sinners and therefore set apart from God. Jesus Christ, God's son, came as one of us, and paid the price of our sin through his atoning death on the cross. Through faith, we can be born again into new spiritual life and a renewed relationship with God.
We believe Church is a fellowship of believers.
The Church is not a building, but people. And it is not people in just one meeting place, one city, one country, or even one time. The Church extends beyond the walls of the local meeting place and throughout the world to include every person who trusts Jesus Christ for their salvation.
We believe there is freedom in Christ.
While we take our faith and relationship with Jesus Christ seriously, we refuse to allow differences over minor doctrinal issues or interpretations of the Bible to divide us.
We believe in the work of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit first brings us to faith, then confirms our faith and empowers Christians to resist temptation and live lives pleasing to God. The word often associated with the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is power. From the Greek form of that word we derive the word dynamite. While God's power is truly explosive, its purpose is to build up the Kingdom of God and never to destroy or divide.
